I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky It implies she lived under other people's shadows that she's unhappy in general. It's about being alone and feeling different from other people. I think this relates to the first verse of the song, it's about living as a minority and not being heard nor understood by people. There are many ways to interpret this, my take is that again she lacked initiative to change her life, "she'd pray" it implies hoping someone would change her life for her, she was just waiting for her life to change rather than taking the initiative herself. This verse talks about her desires, she's imaging her life could potentially be, and at the same time she's wondering is she will ever be happy. The verse "I'd just stare at her window" implicates that whenever she was faced with such moments she would just hope things would change, that deep down she wanted to make a change in her life but at the same time she lacked the initiative, she would just stare she wouldn't actually try to grab what was behind it. The word rain implies sadness, the rain in the lyrics represents those moments when everything came crashing down. Perhaps she was an introvert, shy, anything really, it's phrased to be as relatable as possible. We can go as far as defining her as an underdog. Grew up in a small town - My take on this is that she grew up being a minority, there was something that made her life harder than most people. I'm going to try to find a general and relatable meaning behind the song rather than a literal and specific one. I think the song is about changing your life for the better, it's about making changes that will allow you to live your life as happiest as possible. Maybe I don't know where they'll take me, but I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change I'll do what it takes 'til I touch the skyīut I won't forget all the ones that I loveĪnd I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change What was supposed to simply satiate fans’ appetites until the first single from her album was released turned into a global hit that became the title track of her 2004 album.I'll spread my wings, and I'll learn how to fly Featured on the soundtrack for The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, “Breakaway” was originally released as a single when Clarkson was in between albums. Kelly sounds great singing it, and it was a big hit for us.”Ĭlarkson’s voice took the song to new heights. “As it turned out, it wasn’t quite right for Avril’s album, so we pitched it to Kelly Clarkson. It was inspired by her life,” adds Gerrard. “The song was originally written for Avril. “Avril came over to write with us, Avril talked about her life and what things were important to her, she was the inspiration for the song,” Benenate told Songwriter Universeabout how the song was written, adding that Gerrard built the track while she forged ahead with the lyrics. They approved, with the song’s famous opening lines being, Grew up in a small town / And when the rain would fall down / I’d just stare out my window. She asked Lavigne and her co-writers if she could change the original line and when the snow would fall down, inspired by Lavigne’s upbringing in the wintry Ontario, Canada, to “rain” to reflect the weather in her native Texas. Though Clarkson didn’t write the song, she did make a notable change.
